Transplant protocol requires that transplant patients be within a 30 to 45 minute ride of the hospital as they get close to being transplanted. Many transplant patients are also required to go through extensive rehabilitation before and after their lifesaving transplant. Insurance companies do not cover the related costs and services for housing, travel and living expenses for these patients and their families. This leaves many without the support network to be as strong as possible before and after transplant. Studies have shown that the stronger a person is before transplant, the better and faster they recover after transplant.
